When a Lossless Copy Is Worth the Extra Bytes

Converting a JPG to PNG will not recover detail that JPEG compression already discarded - that data is gone. What it does give you is a lossless container, so every subsequent save keeps the file exactly as it is instead of degrading a little further. That matters if you are about to edit the image repeatedly, add transparency, or hand it to a tool that expects PNG. Expect the file to get considerably larger: PNG stores every pixel exactly, which is the whole point, and photographs are the worst case for it.

Does converting to PNG improve the quality?

No. The detail JPEG discarded cannot be recovered. PNG only stops any further loss from happening.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?

PNG is lossless and stores every pixel exactly, while JPEG throws away data to save space. For photographs the PNG can easily be five times larger.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

Not automatically - a JPG has no transparency to carry over. Use the background remover if you want to cut the subject out.

Is PNG better than JPG?

For graphics, text and transparency, yes. For photographs, JPG or WebP give a far smaller file at the same visible quality.
